Louisiana Reshaped

Since the 1970s, Louisiana's economy has frequently sputtered,

increasing the state's reliance on the oil industry.

We will focus on how Louisiana's economy and infrastructure

was severely affected

due to the unexpected occurrence of incidents in the 21st Century.

Louisiana has changed a lot over the years.

Firstly, Agriculture is no longer as important to Louisiana's economy as it once was.

The state also scores high in crude petroleum and natural gas production.

Most importantly, New Orleans became a popular tourism destination, known for its distinctive food culture, arts and entertainment and, of course, Jazz fest. (Britannica, 2019)

Even though there was a huge up-rise, due to the location of Louisiana on the Gulf Coast, it has experienced the effects of tropical storms and damaging hurricanes on a regular basis. (Britannica, 2019)

We will focus on the years 2005, 2008 and 2010, as these were the years that majorly affected the state of Louisiana.

Hurricane Katrina and Rita

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana, and only a few later Hurricane Rita joined.

Both Hurricanes left devastating effects on the economy and families of Louisiana. (Null, 2008)

The Largest Evacuation

In 2008, in advance of hurricane Gustav, 1.9 million people evacuated southern Louisiana, making it the state's largest evacuation in history.

Hurricane Gustav had an effect on the 2008 presidential election. ([Null], 2010)

The British Petroleum Explosion

In 2010, the British petroleum exploded. Also known as, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This is largest marine oil spill in history. The petroleum had leaked across 149,000 square kilometres of the Gulf of Mexico. (Strange, 2010)
